'Twelfth Night or What You Will' opens at CCU

April 8, 2015

Coastal Carolina University's Theatre Department will present "Twelfth Night or What You Will," from Thursday, April 9, through Saturday, April 18, in the Edwards Theatre. General admission is $15, faculty/ staff admission is $10 and student admission is $5.

The CCU production, directed by faculty member John Woodson, sets the play in present day. Taking his cue from the subtitle "What You Will," Woodson has adapted the play to reflect contemporary pop culture.

The phrase "twelfth night" usually serves as a reference to the 12th day after Christmas, and marks the celebration and festivities of Epiphany, says Woodson. In the hands of Shakespeare, "Twelfth Night or What You Will" turns into a romp of love, mistaken identities, gender confusion and, eventually, joyful discovery.

The shipwrecked Viola lands on the shore of Illyria, and disguised as a page, Cesario, searches for her lost brother. Countess Olivia, too, mourns the loss of her brother. When the lovely Countess meets the handsome young page, deception, unrequited love and confusion rule. The show is a topsy-turvy pursuit of love that has delighted audiences for centuries.

Performances are set for Thursday, April 9, through Saturday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, April 15, though Friday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m., with two shows on Saturday, April 18, at 3 and 7:30 p.m.

Students in the main cast are Connor Kendall as Orsino, Kathryn Albers as Olivia, Shaleigh Phillips as Viola and Riley Phoenix as Sebastian.
