Grammy-winning Ying Quartet to play at CCU

April 9, 2015

The internationally renowned Ying Quartet will perform at Coastal Carolina University on Friday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. General admission tickets are $15, and seats are reserved.

Now in their second decade as a quartet, the Yings have established themselves as an ensemble of the highest musical qualifications in their tours across the United States and abroad. Their performances take place in diverse settings, from the White House and the world's most important concert halls to public schools and juvenile prisons.

The quartet consists of award winning first violinist Ayano Ninmiya, who joined the quartet in their 2010-11 season, and founding members and siblings, cellist David Ying, violist Phillip Ying and violinist Janet Ying. The Ying Quartet first came to professional prominence in the early 1990s during their years as resident quartet of Jesup, Iowa, a farm town of 2,000 people, where they played before audiences of six to 600 in homes, schools, churches and banks.

For their CCU concert, the Yings will perform Beethoven's String Quartet No. 10 in E-flat Major ("Harp"), Stravinsky's "Three Pieces for String Quartet" and Tchaikovsky's String Quartet No. 1 in D Major.

The Ying Quartet's recordings have generated consistent, enthusiastic acclaim. Their 2007 Telarc release of the three Tchaikovsky Quartets and the Souvenir de Florence (with James Dunham and Paul Katz) was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Chamber Music Performance category. In addition, their much-heralded collaboration with the Turtle Island Quartet, "Four + 4," won a Grammy Award in 2005.

The Ying Quartet is sponsored by Coastal Carolina University's Cultural Arts Committee.

Tickets for the event are $15. Teens, CCU and HGTC alumni, OLLI members, groups and senior citizens receive a discount. CCU and HGTC students can purchase tickets for $5.
