Local author to discuss Mansfield Plantation at CCU

April 17, 2015

Historian and local author Christopher Boyle will discuss the rich history of Mansfield Plantation near Georgetown from his book, "Mansfield Plantation: Legacy on the Black River," at Coastal Carolina University's Edwards Recital Hall. The presentation, which will take place at Wednesday, April 22, at 4 p.m., is free and open to the public.

Boyle is a part-time teaching associate at CCU and a full-time social studies teacher at Socastee High School. After graduating from CCU with a bachelor's degree in history, he earned a master's degree in American History at Winthrop University in 1996. "Mansfield Plantation" was published in August 2014.

Located on the banks of the Black River, Mansfield Plantation is one of the best-preserved antebellum rice plantations. In 1718, it started as a 500-acre land grant given to a small group of villagers near Georgetown. The plantation grew to encompass nearly 1,000 acres.

The Edwards Recital Hall is located in Room 152 of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. For more information, contact Eldred E. Prince, director of the Waccamaw Center for Cultural and Historical Studies, at 843-349-2434.
