CCU presents ‘Mindful Meditations'

August 26, 2015

"Mindful Conversations: The Science and Humanity of Mindfulness Meditation" is the topic of public discussion on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 5 p.m. in Lackey Chapel at Coastal Carolina University. The event, sponsored by CCU's Department of Philosophy and Religion, is free and open to the public.

Ronald Green, assistant professor of philosophy and religious studies, will present the program, part of a series of public discussions on mindful meditation scheduled for the 2015-2016 academic year. Green joined the faculty of CCU in 2008.Joining in the discussion will be David Terry, a CCU alumnus (May 2015) with a bachelor's degree in psychology.

This lecture will consider the science supporting mindfulness practice and its benefits. What do brain imaging and psychological testing tell us that mindful mediation actually does? What techniques are involved in making positive brain changes?

A study at George Mason University found that after five weeks of doing mindfulness meditation, a team of NCAA Division I basketball players reported less stress, more focus and better teamwork. Team members said they reacted more efficiently during contests, felt that they were maximizing motions and that play-making abilities were heightened by using the breathing techniques. This talk looks at numerous recent claims about mindfulness, presents brain-imaging results of university studies and describes the basics for anyone who wants to try mindfulness meditation.

Lackey Chapel is located at 105 University Drive off University Boulevard in Conway. Plenty of parking is available adjacent to the chapel. For additional information, contact Green at 843-349-2782 or at rgreen@coastal.edu.
