CCU receives donation from Wal-Mart

August 27, 2015

Coastal Carolina University received a $9,000 donation from Myrtle Beach Wal-Mart market stores during CCU's recent "Back-to-School" event at the Carolina Forest Wal-Mart.

Area Wal-Mart stores pooled together the cash donation, and store managers presented the check to CCU President David A. DeCenzo in front of the Wal-Mart store on U.S. 501 South near campus. The contribution will benefit the Live Well health initiative at CCU.

"The event took a lot of time and effort to organize, but we couldn't be prouder of our Teal Nation," said Mike McCarthy, store manager. "Our associates really ran with it, and we wanted to ensure that the needs of the students were met."

McCarthy reports that the Carolina Forest Wal-Mart was number three in the nation in team apparel sales. The check presentation took place during an event featuring various vendors, including Frito-Lay, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Sam's Club, Tuzla Chips, Little Debbie and Zike Scooters. Shoppers, including many CCU students and families, received free food and drinks, and raffle tickets were sold for various items. Chauncey, CCU's mascot, was also on-hand to greet visitors and distribute CCU merchandise.

"We're fortunate to have this relationship with Wal-Mart," said DeCenzo. "Events like this are a good opportunity for us to engage with our community business members who support CCU throughout the year. We can't thank Wal-Mart enough for its time in creating this event, its donation and its devotion to CCU."
