Area flooding update

October 5, 2015

Wednesday, Oct.7, 11:42 a.m.

Coastal Carolina University is very fortunate to come through a major flood event with minimal impact. While many areas and roads on campus had minor flooding, all waters have now receded and the University has resumed normal operations.

The national media continues to cover areas in South Carolina that have experienced major flooding. Governor Haley has expressed concern for the Conway area because of potential evacuations due to the Waccamaw River flooding. Fortunately, riverine flooding from the Waccamaw River will not impact the CCU main campus.

Safety remains our top priority. Students who live in or travel through areas that are flooded and who do not feel safe traveling to campus should contact their professors for information on missed assignments and alternative instructional resources.

Faculty and staff who are still affected by the flooding should stay in contact with their supervisors.

The Coastal Carolina University Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor the situation and provide updates to the CCU Emergency Management Team as necessary.

Tuesday, Oct. 6, 8:50 a.m.

Students, faculty and staff can now park in the Coastal Science Center parking lot, which is now clear of water, rather than the GG parking lot as directed earlier.

Monday, Oct. 5, 3:00 p.m.

Coastal Carolina University will delay classes on Tuesday, Oct. 6, due to flooding. The University will open at 10:50 a.m. (normal class time change) and resume normal hours of operation tomorrow.

Faculty and staff should report by 10:50 a.m. unless otherwise notified by your supervisor. However, if you feel that road conditions are unsafe in your area, please use your best judgment about driving. Liberal leave will be authorized for staff who are concerned about safe travel.

Students, if you feel that road conditions are unsafe in your area, please use your best judgement about driving. State emergency declarations for non-travel should be followed and Faculty will be authorized to be flexible regarding attendance for students traveling from areas where there are adverse conditions.

Friday, Oct. 2, 11 a.m.

Coastal Carolina University Emergency Management continues to monitor the weather and the potential for flooding this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for our area that is in effect through Sunday. The area will experience steady rain this weekend with periods of heavy rain and blustery winds. There may be some minor flooding on campus. Please avoid flooded areas and report them to Public Safety by calling 843-349-2177.

The rounds of heavy rain may produce life-threatening conditions for drivers such as low visibility, water washing over the roadways, and possible roadway washouts. All students, faculty and staff should be aware of these conditions and be prepared to respond to flood situations. Please review the flood safety information below.

-- Stay informed. Monitor the local media for weather information and updates.

-- Do not walk through flood waters. It takes only 6 inches of moving water to knock you off your feet. Standing water hides many potential dangers, including chemicals and debris.

-- Do not drive into or through flooded roadways or around barricades. Water may be deeper than it appears, and it takes only 4 inches of flowing water to push a car. "Turn Around, Don't Drown!"

Thursday, Oct. 1, 6 p.m.

Coastal Carolina University Emergency Management is monitoring the weather due to the rain event forecast for our area. CCU will likely experience heavy rain this weekend because of a low pressure system bringing tropical moisture up from the Gulf of Mexico. The current forecast indicates that our area could receive up to 10 inches of rain thru Sunday. The ground is already saturated and the additional heavy rainfall could lead to flooding in the low-lying areas on campus. Hurricane Joaquin is forecast to remain off shore and will not directly affect South Carolina, however, the tropical moisture associated with Joaquin will add to the heavy rain this weekend and we may experience gusty winds on campus Saturday and Sunday. Coastal Carolina emergency management will continue to monitor the weather for any changes that could negatively impact our area. Students, faculty and staff are urged to stay informed and monitor the local media outlets for additional information.
