Trustees approve new degree programs

October 2, 2015

At its regular meeting today, the Board of Trustees of Coastal Carolina University approved the establishment of two new degree programs, a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and geography and a Master of Education in instructional technology. Degree programs must be approved by the South Carolina Higher Education Commission and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) before being officially added to the University curriculum.

The board approved a motion allowing the University administration to move forward with hiring an architect to explore design options to increase the seating capacity at Brooks Stadium to meet NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) requirements. Approval was also given to a motion to move forward with hiring an architect to explore design options for a new campus soccer complex.

The board adopted an amendment to the University's current general bond resolution. The change potentially reduces the interest costs on future bond issuances. A resolution was also approved requesting the State Treasurer's Office to refund two general obligation bonds on behalf of the University. The principal amount will not exceed $13 million and is expected to save CCU approximately $1.1 million.

Amending a previous motion, the board approved adding graduate students to receive automatic one-year membership in CCU's official alumni organization, the1954 Society, upon graduation. Previously, only undergraduates received this benefit.

The board also approved restructuring fees for student Orientation, effective summer 2016. The new schedule is as follows: the two-day Orientation fee for freshman students is $155 per student and $20 family fee per guest; the one-day Orientation fee for transfer students is $90 per student and $20 family fee per guest.

Four lease agreements or renewals were also approved by the board.

The board also received and accepted the institution's annual audit, prepared and presented by Cline Brandt Kocheower & Co., P.A. For the eighth consecutive year, CCU received a clean and unmodified opinion. The term "unmodified opinion" means that the institution's financial statements are fairly presented and are free of material misstatements. The auditor had no findings or adjustments to report.
