CCU faculty to read from new book about Conway football

October 1, 2015

Coastal Carolina University's faculty members Joe Oestreich and Scott Pleasant will discuss and read from their new book in a "Words to Say It" forum on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m. in the James J. Johnson Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.

Oestreich, an associate professor of English, and Pleasant, director of the CCU Writing Center, collaborated on a book called "Lines of Scrimmage: A Story of Football, Race and Redemption." The book chronicles the 1989 Conway High School football boycott, in which 31 of the team's 37 black players walked away in protest, sparking a larger movement in Horry County's African American community.

After the presentation, sponsored by the Waccamaw Center for Cultural and Historic Studies and the Department of English at CCU, Nelljean Rice, dean of University College, will moderate a discussion. A brief reception and book signing will follow.

The Johnson Auditorium is in room 116 in the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration, located at 119 Chanticleer Drive, Conway. For more information, contact Jason Ockert at jockert@coastal.edu or call 843-349-2531.
