November 2, 2015

The world premiere of a new work for symphonic band commemorating the victims of the shooting at Charleston's Emanuel AME Church will be presented at a Coastal Carolina University band concert on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. General admission is $7 with discounts available.

"Hymn for Emanuel," composed by James Syler, was commissioned by CCU's Department of Music. The composition will be performed by the University's Symphonic Band, conducted by Richard L. Johnson, professor of music. All proceeds from the sale of the work will be donated to the Emanuel AME Church.

Syler, a noted composer who has been awarded more than 20 commissions during his career, is a member of the music faculty at the University of Texas at San Antonio. His works, known for their lyricism, drama, energy and innovation, have been performed nationally and internationally. The composer plans to attend the CCU premiere performance.

The program will also include performances by CCU's student wind band, called Coastal Winds, and its Percussion Ensemble. In addition to Johnson, the concert will feature conductors Raul Barcenes, conductor of CCU's athletic bands, and Jesse Willis, professor of percussion. Jeffrey Jones, professor of voice, will also perform.

Other pieces that will be performed include "Rocky Point Holiday" by Ron Nelson; "O Magnum Mysterium" by Morten Johannes Lauridsen and H. Robert Reynolds; two pieces by Percy Aldridge Grainger; "Punchinello" by Alfred Reed; and "The Purple Carnival," a march by Harry L. Alford.

Senior citizens, OLLI members, alumni, teens, and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff may purchase tickets for $5, and CCU/HGTC students and children's tickets are $3. To reserve a ticket, call the box office at 843-349-ARTS (2787) or visit between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
