Jazz album from the 1960s to be recreated at CCU concert

November 6, 2015

The Grand Strand Jazz Orchestra will recreate the classic jazz album "The Blues and the Abstract Truth" in a concert on Sunday, Nov. 15, at 4 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. General admission tickets are $17, with discounts available.

"The Blues and the Abstract Truth" was a landmark jazz album, released in 1961, that featured several famous instrumentalists of the time, such as pianist Bill Evans, saxophonist Eric Dolphy and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. They played the compositions of Oliver Nelson, who later became known for his contributions to film and television music. Songs on the album are "Stolen Moments," "Hoe-Down," "Cascades," "Yearnin'," "Butch and Butch," and "Teenie's Blues."

The Grand Strand Jazz Orchestra, directed by CCU faculty member Chris Connolly, is a professional big band, dedicated to preserving the art of Big Band jazz and comprised of professional musicians, mostly from the Myrtle Beach area. Connolly teaches low brass at CCU and is also a composer and arranger.

CCU alumnus Simon Harding and current CCU students Tim Lewis and J. P. Taylor are also in the band.

Senior citizens, OLLI members, alumni, teens, and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff may purchase tickets for $12, and CCU/HGTC students and children's tickets are $5. To reserve a ticket, call the box office at 843-349-ARTS (2787) or visit during open hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday through Friday.

The auditorium is located at 108 Spadoni Park Circle on the Conway campus.
