January 19, 2016

Sixteen Coastal Carolina University freshmen have been named South Carolina Teaching Fellows for 2015-2016, according to Amanda Darden, director of the Spadoni College of Education Teaching Fellows Program.

Members of the first cohort of Teaching Fellows to be named at CCU are: Madison Aaron of West Columbia; Conner Elms of Florence; Alyssa Fencel-Davila of Summerville; Benjamin Flo of Conway; Alexandra Hoyt of Conway; Aaron Lampe of Pawleys Island; Bailey Lewis of Rock Hill; Taylor McConnell of Georgetown; Hannah McKinney of Murrells Inlet; Lindsey Morgan of Myrtle Beach; Hannah Rowles of Little River; Nicole Snow of Summerville; Kelli Swann of Bennettsville; Jenna Tindall of Hemingway; Jordan Welch of Turbeville; and Wilson Wiggins of Leesville.

The Teaching Fellows Program provides advanced enrichment opportunities, professional development, and relevant involvement with communities and businesses that will prepare educators who understand and can affect the achievement/opportunity gap. The Teaching Fellows Program aims to improve literacy among area students and emphasizes the college's commitment to work with regional school districts to address achievement/opportunity gap issues. This specific program will serve as a model for all CCU's undergraduate teacher education programs and includes in-service learning projects, teacher education courses, field experiences and a culminating internship that focuses on experiencing and understanding school environments and becoming teacher leaders.

Teaching Fellows are chosen through a rigorous selection process, which includes an online application, an interview with and presentation to a team of three educators, and a scored response. Applicants who are rewarded the fellowship receive up to $24,000 in scholarships (up to $6,000 a year for four years) to attend the South Carolina Teaching Fellows Institution. Additionally, fellows are offered numerous professional development opportunities and are involved with communities and businesses through various service projects and partnerships with local schools.
