CCU professor wins book award

Eldred E. "Wink" Prince Jr., associate professor of history and chair of Coastal Carolina University's Department of History, has won the prestigious George C. Rogers Jr. Award for the Best Book of South Carolina History for 2001. Prince's book Long Green: The Rise and Fall of Tobacco in South Carolina was published last year by the University of Georgia Press. Prince received the award recently at the South Carolina Historical Society's 147th annual meeting in Charleston.

The South Carolina Historical Society presents the award annually to recognize extraordinary accomplishments in the historiography of South Carolina. The award is named for the late George C. Rogers Jr., distinguished historian, professor and author of many books on South Carolina history.

A native of Loris, Prince joined the Coastal faculty in 1987. He earned a bachelor's degree, master's degree and a Ph.D. in history from the University of South Carolina.
