Bands team up for joint concert at Coastal Carolina University

October 4, 2002

The Coastal Carolina University Symphonic Band will team up with the North Myrtle Beach Community Concert Band for a joint concert on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium on the Coastal campus. The event is free and open to the public.

"Pairing Coastal's band with the North Myrtle Beach ensemble is an exciting way for the university to reach out to other arts groups and provide an enriching experience for our students at the same time," said James L. Tully, director of bands at Coastal.

The North Myrtle Beach Community Concert Band -led by Bert Owens, who will co-conduct the concert with Tully - is the only civic musical ensemble of its kind in the area, just as Coastal's concert band is the only university ensemble between Wilmington and Charleston. "It seems natural, given our similarities, that our two groups should make music together," said Tully.

The program for the concert will include patriotic marches by John Philip Sousa as well as arrangements of popular and classical pieces by Bach, Percy Grainger and Claude T. Smith.

Coastal music professor and noted soprano Anne Denbow-Gilbert will also perform, singing an arrangement of Sousa's "Summer."
