Celebrities to perform for students Aug. 21 and 22

August 11, 2003

A star of MTV's "Real World" and a comedian will perform at Coastal Carolina University on Aug. 21 and 22 at 7 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium.

Mike Mizanin, who was also on "The Real World 10: Back to New York," appears on Aug. 21, and Tess Drake performs on Aug. 22. The performances are free and open to the public.

Mizanin is now a regular on the college circuit, having found stardom after a five-month stint on the popular MTV reality show. He speaks about diversity and his experience living with six people with very different lifestyles. "The Real World" follows the story of seven strangers picked to live in a house and have their lives taped and aired on national television.

Since his appearance on the "Real World," he has been taking acting classes in Los Angeles, speaking to college students and enjoying a wrestling career in the Ultimate Pro Wrestling league. (His alter ego is a professional wrestler named "The Miz.")

Drake, known professionally as Tess, a comedian from NBC's "Last Comic Standing," believes her role in the comedy world is to "make it clear that voluptuous women will one day inherit the earth."

She has also appeared on the Def Jam Comedy Tour, on Brian McKnight's "Back at One," NBC's "Late Friday," "The Jamie Foxx Show" and BET's "Comic View."

A native of Sandusky, Ohio, she later moved to Oakland where she was married - for 90 days - and therein discovered her comedy career. "The ability to laugh at divorce and the absurdities of dating gave her a sense of strength, and a ton of material," says her press release. Coastal"s Office of Student Activities is sponsoring the two performers.
