November 5, 2003

In addition to six performances at Coastal Carolina University, "Hamlet," considered by many to be Shakespeare's finest play, will be performed at the Strand Theater in Georgetown on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m.

The Coastal Carolina University production, directed by Sandi Shackelford and starring professional actor and Coastal graduate Kevin Kane, will also be staged at three area high schools including Aynor, St. James and the Academy for Arts, Science and Technology.

The play opens at Coastal's Wheelwright Auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m. and runs through Sunday, Nov. 9 with 7:30 p.m. shows on Thursday through Saturday and matinees at 2 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 for children 18 and younger.

The production at the Strand Theater on 710 Front Street in Georgetown is $15 with the proceeds going to benefit the Swamp Fox Players. Seating is open, as opposed to reserved. Call 547-2924 for ticket information.

"Hamlet" is also being performed at Aynor High, St. James High and the Academy for Arts, Science and Technology in Myrtle Beach. The Aynor and St. James shows are for students only, but the Academy performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, and it's free and open to the public. Seating is limited so arrive early; doors open at 7 p.m. Call 839-1412.

The action of the play begins following the death of Hamlet's father, the King of Denmark, and the overhasty marriage of his mother to his father's brother - the current King and usurper of the throne. Hamlet's grief and rage are multiplied when the ghost of his father appears to tell him that his death was "most unnatural ... at the hands of the man who now wears his crown."

The plot thickens as Hamlet feigns madness in order to find proof of his uncle's guilt, accidentally kills his girlfriend's father, battles pirates on the high seas, buries his true love, and faces the final treachery of the king in the form of a poisoned sword.

In addition to Kane, the 17-member cast includes students and faculty of Coastal. For ticket information for the Nov. 6-9 performances, contact the Wheelwright Box Office at 349-2502.
