November 13, 2003

Coastal Carolina University politics professor Jim Henderson was recently elected president of the South Carolina Conference of the American Association of University Professors. He was installed during the Nov. 1 fall conference at Furman University.

Henderson, who also heads Coastal's AAUP chapter, has announced that the association's spring 2004 meeting will be April 10 in Greenwood. It will be hosted by Piedmont Technological College, and the meeting theme will be academic freedom in South Carolina.

Henderson, a veteran of the Peace Corps, is a contemporary history and international political economics specialist who teaches courses at Coastal dealing with political violence on the global scene. He is the author of numerous books and articles on Latin American history. Earlier this year his book, "Ten Notable Women of Latin America," was brought out by Aguilar, a major Spanish language publisher.
