Twenty-seven students from Bogota, Colombia, are
participating in
a summer cooperative work-study program which has been established by
the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration at Coastal
Carolina University, Burroughs and Chapin Co., Inc., and Pontificia
Universidad Javeriana, a prestigious Jesuit university located in
Bogota. The students arrived in June and will return to Bogota in late
August.
The program allows the students to work as interns at several
sites along the Grand Strand while taking Coastal summer school courses
at the Burroughs and Chapin Center for Excellence in Myrtle Beach. Some
of the students are enrolled in a business statistics course, which is
being taught by Joe Parker, instructor of mathematics and statistics at
Coastal. Other courses, such as international marketing and business
English, were completed during Summer I session.
"A major benefit of the program is that it allows the students to
earn academic credit while working in the tourism industry, but perhaps
more importantly, the program allows the students to see firsthand how
American businesses operate," said James Eason, associate dean of
Coastal's Wall College of Business Administration. "The students
performed well during Summer I and had a rewarding experience, and I
think the success of this program will open the door for other similar
programs with students from abroad in future years."
