CCU to host two summer institutes to train AP teachers

Two Coastal Carolina University professors have received approval and funding from the State Department of Education to offer Advanced Placement Teacher Institutes during the summer of 2004. The institutes are designed for high school teachers who are interested in teaching advanced placement courses.

Prashant Sansgiry, professor of mathematics and statistics, will offer an Advanced Placement Teacher Institute in Calculus AB on June 11 and 12 and from June 14 to 25. Eliza Glaze, assistant professor of history, will offer an Advanced Placement Teacher Institute in world history from July 12 to 23. .

A teacher who successfully completes the institute, which will award three hours of graduate credit, will be qualified to teach the advanced placement course at the high school level in the area in which the institute was completed..

Last year, 10,646 South Carolina public school students took 17,429 exams in 33 of 34 AP exam areas. The five most-taken AP exams were in U.S. History, English Literature and Composition, Calculus AB, English Language and Composition, and Biology. .
