Pianist Silvard to perform at Coastal Carolina University

Pianist Silvard performs Sept. 19 at CCU.
Internationally-known pianist Silvard will perform at Coastal Carolina University on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The concert is free and open to the public.

Silvard Kool, who goes by the single name "Silvard," is an alumnus of Coastal with a bachelor's degree in marine biology. He worked as a graduate assistant at the Smithsonian Institution and earned a Ph.D. in zoology from George Washington University.

The pianist, who is from the Netherlands, has a unique and highly innovative style he calls "neoclassical contemporary," though he admits to being influenced by artists such as George Winston and David Lanz. His romantic style is a favorite of audiences from Boston to Milwaukee to Toronto. He has nine CDs to his credit, including "Touched by the Sea," his latest.

Silvard grew up in Holland where he began to study piano at the age of 10. He is fond of "free-flow" compositions of his own, as well as more traditional piano pieces. When not touring and performing, Silvard is a professor of biology at Boston College who specializes in mollusks. The piano concert is part of Coastal's 50 cultural arts performances celebrating the university's 50th anniversary year.
