Innovative Mexican dance troupe to perform at Coastal

October 1, 2004

The customs, history and ancient folklore of Mexico will be brought to life Tuesday, Oct.19 at 7 p.m. with a performance by Ballet Folklorico Mexico in Wheelwright Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. The event is free and open to the public.

Jesus and Carmen Avila founded Ballet Folklorico in 1972. The siblings fused classical ballet and folk dance to create a new dance concept. The 18-member troupe has traveled around the world performing routines ranging from pre-Columbian to contemporary Mexican regional folk dances.

Through dancing, vibrant music and highly decorative costumes featuring flamboyantly feathered outfits, Ballet Folklorico Mexico celebrates the historic, cultural and artistic spirit of Mexico. Embracing the richness of diversity in Mexican heritage and culture, Ballet Folklorico Mexico is an exhibition of color that unites dancers in a signature performance of music, costumes and choreography that has earned this dance troupe international acclaim.
