Honors presented to top faculty and students at CCU Coastal Carolina University presented awards for faculty and student academic achievement and recognition at the annual Honors Convocation on Tuesday, April 29 in Wheelwright Auditorium.
CCU professor publishes new volume on fish biology Richard Moore, professor of biology and assistant vice president for grants and sponsored research at Coastal Carolina University, has co-authored a new edition of "Biology of Fishes," a widely used textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. Co-written with Quentin Bone of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom in Plymouth, U.K., the third edition represents a substantial revision and update of earlier editions.
CCU student to perform contemporary dance "Footnotes," an interpretive dance performance about shoes as a metaphor for life experience, will premiere at the Black Box Theater on Wednesday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. Created by Coastal Carolina University student Jessica King, the multimedia performance is a culmination of her Spring Semester Independent Study in Visual Arts. The event is free and open to the public; tickets are not required.
CCU student-produced Tempo magazine receives national honors Coastal Carolina University's student-produced features publication Tempo magazine recently received recognition for its 2007 fall semester issue. The awards were given by the Society of Newspaper Designers (SND), which includes magazines.
Summer Lifelong Learning at Coastal Carolina University The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Coastal Carolina University is offering 40 different informative and entertaining summer courses and workshops in June and July.

Summer hours are nearly here
CCU's summer hours start Monday, May 12 in the administrative offices. There are some exceptions, so check with Human Resources or with your supervisor.
Through Aug. 8, the hours are:
Monday: 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday through Thursday: 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. to noon

Sharpen your tech skills
CCU faculty and staff are invited to work on their technology skills through Mayfest sessions in the TEAL Lab. This month the lineup includes sessions by the CETL staff as well as Rebecca Searle (Foreign Languages), Bob Peterson (Scholars Academy) and Debbie Peret (ITS). Classes range from podcasting and videocasting to Web design and Blackboard tips and tricks. For session descriptions or to register, go to www.coastal.edu/teal/training.
Learn about animal minds
CCU professor Robert Bass will give a talk on the topic "Understanding Animal Minds" on Wednesday, May 14 at 6 p.m. at Conway Library. The discussion is free and open to the public. Based on discoveries that have been made through close observation, Bass will discuss the emotional and mental processes of animals. He will describe an animal's capability to love, reason, plan, deceive and feel anguish.

Men's Track and Field's Jones Second, Edelman Third in Hammer Throw at Duke Twilight Redshirt senior Galen Jones was second overall and the top collegiate finisher in the hammer throw with a 195'2" (59.48m) toss at the Duke Twilight Sunday, May 4 at Wallace Wade Stadium. Senior Jake Edelman took third in the event with a 189'5" (57.75m) launch.
Baseball Falls in Series Finale to Georgia Tech 11-4 Georgia Tech broke a 2-2 tie with three in the fifth and four in the sixth in an 11-4 win over Coastal May 4 in Atlanta, Ga. Coastal will be off for final exams and return to the diamond May 9 at home against High Point. Game time is at 6 p.m.
Women's Track and Field's Mensing Receives Second Big South Weekly Honor Redshirt sophomore Felicitas Mensing was selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, April 30 after finishing fourth in the steeplechase at Penn Relays last week. Mensing picked up her first Big South Athlete of the Week honor April 9 after she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Duke Asics Invitational.

Samuel Taylor Eubanks, a freshman political science major from Spartanburg, was presented with the Robert W. Squatriglia Outstanding Undergraduate Leader Award for 2007-2008 at the May 1 meeting of the Rotary Club of Conway. The award is co-sponsored annually by CCU's Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), the national leadership honor society, and the Rotary Club of Conway. The award is given to a Coastal student who best exemplifies the ideals of ODK and the Rotary motto of "service above self."
Florence Eliza Glaze recently delivered an invited lecture and led a discussion at the Università di Salerno (Italy) on manuscript studies and research methods useful for pursuing scholarship in the history of medieval Italian medicine. Glaze was invited by members of the Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia at Salerno to address a group of graduate students, undergraduates, faculty and the general public. Graduate students traveled from Rome and Siena to attend the event. Glaze also delivered a presentation at the American Academy in Rome, where she is resident as the Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in Medieval Studies.
