Donald Ray Pollock grew up in southern Ohio, in a holler named Knockemstiff. He dropped out of high school at seventeen to work in a meatpacking plant, and then spent thirty-two years employed in a paper mill in Chillicothe, Ohio. A graduate of Ohio State University’s MFA Program in Creative Writing, his first book, the story collection Knockemstiff, won the 2009 PEN/Robert Bingham Fellowship. His first novel, The Devil All the Time, won the Chaffin Award for Appalachian Writing and the Grand Prix de Litterature Policiere, a French prize for the best international crime novel. Pollock is the recipient of a 2012 Guggenheim Fellowship, and his essays and stories have appeared in The New York Times, Epoch, Sou’wester and many other venues.
