“Erin Wiersma: Solo Exhibition” will be on display in Coastal Carolina University’s Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery from July 8 to Aug. 23, with a closing reception on Thursday, Aug. 22, at 4:30 p.m. The show and reception are free and open to the public.

An assistant professor of art at Kansas State University (KSU), Wiersma is an artist from Somerville, N.J. Her work explores the intangible aspects of the human presence using her own being as a point of reference.

Wiersma earned a B.A. Fine Arts in painting and drawing from Messiah College in Grantham, Penn., and an M.F.A in painting from the University of Connecticut at Storrs. She has shown works in exhibitions ranging from the A.I.R Gallery in Brooklyn, N.Y., Modern Arts Midtown in Omaha, Nebraska and ARC Gallery in Chicago, to countless college and university shows. Her work has received awards from KSU, K-State Olathe Innovation and Studio Visit Magazine.

“When I paint, I seek to achieve a state in which I’m present, to find an instant of experiential awareness, both in the moment and beyond moments, what T.S. Eliot calls a ‘still point of the turning world,’” says Wiersma. “Freed from ordinary time in this way, the act of painting becomes a place to operate beyond Chronos, or chronological time, where I attempt to experience that which extends beyond the initial perceptions of present time and space, where there is an intersection of process, momentum and recording, where the painting becomes both the essence and the phenomenon itself.“

The Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery is located at CCU in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Events are free and open to the public. For additional information, contact, James Arendt, gallery director, at 843-349-6409.
