Why does CCU offer an international studies minor?Simply put, Coastal Carolina University is dedicated to giving its students a modern, up-to-date, and useful education. Many colleges and universities in the nation pay too little attention to international studies and events, a mistake that leaves most of today's graduates clueless to anything but domestic issues. Coastal Carolina demonstrates its committment to prepare students for today and tomorrow by offering a minor in International Studies, along with its many classes with an international bent to them. How do I apply?To apply for the major, you will want to fill out the application found on this site. Print out the application, either in *.PDF*, *.DOC*, or *.RTF* format, and then fill out the application. Take some time first to review the courses that can be used to satisfy the minor before you fill out the courses you plan on taking. The more interesting the course is to you the better you will do in that class. When can I apply?You may apply for the minor at any time during your residency at Coastal Carolina University. It is advisable, however, to first discuss things with your current adviser and to take adequate time to thoroughly plan out your remaining time as a student at Coastal before applying. Why can't I use a course I've taken to satisfy more than one requirement?Coastal Carolina University has decided that every major must have its course requirements met separately. While courses used to fulfill one set of core requirements may be used to satisfy the core requirements for another major, the actual major requirements must be fulfilled on a one-to-one basis whenever possible. This policy is also being instituted for minors. It is outside of the control of the individual departments. What foreign languages are offered at CCU?Coastal Carolina University currently offers introductory courses in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, and Spanish. These introductory courses include 110, 120, and 130 classes in each foreign language, while 111 courses (an intensive course combining 110 and 120) are offered in French, German, and Spanish. Advanced courses are also taught in French, German, and Spanish that cover a wide range of topics. These include classes on foreign literature and culture, opportunities to study abroad, and courses focusing on how to communicate in highly specialzed areas in a foreign language, such as in Business and Tourism. What types of classes can I expect to take?The courses on offer that can satisfy the international studies discipline are diverse and varied. You need not be restricted to only studying the political systems of Asian countries or the historical background of European countries. Instead, you may choose to take courses from a wide range of disciplines, including Art History, Business Administration, English, History, Philosophy, and Sociology, to name a few. |
