The event:

The Professional Golf Management (PGM) program at Coastal Carolina University will host its inaugural CCU Golf Marathon on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at the university's own Quail Creek Golf Course. The (literally) all-day event, a fundraiser for CCU's Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring program, will begin at 6:25 a.m. when roughly 50 PGM students tee up for a sunrise shotgun start. The students will play continuously until sunset (8:10 p.m.). The goal is for each participant to play 100 rounds of golf in one day. Proceeds from the event will be split 80 percent/20 percent between the Mentoring and PGM programs respectively to raise scholarship funds for CCU's Mentoring Program.

The cause:

Did you know that 50 percent of South Carolina's ninth-graders do not go on to finish high school? Coastal's Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring Program is designed to help reverse this catastrophic statistic. This civic/public engagement program, initiated in 2003, aims to improve South Carolina's low high school graduation rate by connecting college students with children who may benefit from some extra encouragement. Each semester, more than 200 Coastal students are serving as mentors to students in 25 Horry County elementary and middle schools. The program also provides resources to CCU faculty who incorporate mentoring in their courses and encourages civic initiatives within the K-12 environment.
