The American Red Cross offers six comprehensive course levels that teach you and your child how to swim skillfully and safely. At Coastal Carolina University we offer 5 of the levels in the Learn-to-Swim program as well as introducing two classes for Preschool ages 3-5. The prerequisite for each level is the successful demonstration of the skills from the preceding level, except for Level I, which has no prerequisite.
Preschool Aquatics Level 1
Preschool Aquatics Level 1 is for ages 3-5 years old. It’s purpose is to help students feel comfortable in the water, learn to enter and exit the water safely, open their eyes underwater, swim on front using arm and leg action with support and more.
Preschool Aquatics Level 2
Preschool Aquatics Level 1 is for ages 4-5 years old. Its purpose is to build upon skills learned in Level 1 and gain greater independence in the skills and develop more comfort in and around the water.
Level 1: INTRODUCTION TO WATER SKILLS – must be at least 6 years of age
The purpose of Level 1 is to help students feel comfortable in the water. Participants learn to enter and exit the water safely, open their eyes underwater, swim on front using arm and leg action and more.
Level 2: FUNDAMENTAL AQUATIC SKILLS
The purpose of Level 2 is to give students success with fundamental skills. Students learn to roll over from front-to-back, swim on front and back with combined stroke as well as float on front and back.
Level 3: STROKE DEVELOPMENT
The purpose of Level 3 is to build on the skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice as well as jumping into water, bobbing with head fully submerged, using rotary breathing, and the front and back crawl strokes.
Level 4: STROKE IMPROVEMENT
The purpose of Level 4 is to help swimmers develop confidence in the skills they have learned. Students will learn front and back crawl strokes, elementary back stroke, breaststroke and butterfly.
Level 5: STROKE REFINEMENT
The purpose of Level 5 is to provide further coordination and refinement of strokes. Students will learn the standing dive, sidestroke, front flip turn, surface dives and more.
If you are uncertain of your child’s ability, please contact Tara Josey at 349-2815 prior to the swim session you wish to attend for an evaluation. Registration is open until lessons are full.
NO PHONE REGISTRATIONS AVAILABLE.
We will accept 10 participants per level. Instructor to participant ratio is 1 Instructor and 1 assistant per 10 kids. We reserve the right to cancel lessons if there are less than 6 participants registered. Each level of Learn-to-Swim includes training in basic water safety and helping a swimmer in distress in addition to the skills outlined.

The Coastal Carolina Crocs Junior Swim Team is open to ages 6-18 years old. We offer a great way for participants to enhance their swimming skills and become more involved in a competitive environment. Our focus is a fun, learning atmosphere where individuals can build endurance and refine their strokes. Our staff provides instruction on stroke technique and refinement. All participants must be able to swim at least 25 yards (1 length of the pool) using at least one of the competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly). Please understand our staff is here to help refine strokes, not teach basic skills. If your child is not ready for this team environment, we suggest our American Red Cross Learn to Swim program.
Practices involve endurance training, skill-specific events & stroke refinement.
All practices for the Crocs are held at Coastal Carolina University.
Recommended swim suit is a one piece. Goggles are required.
There will be practices held through rain and heavy storms, but NOT LIGHTNING! We will make every effort to keep the schedule, however, in the event of lightning swimmers must exit the pool for at least 15 minutes after the last streak of lightning is seen. It will be up to the coaches and parents as to whether the swimmers will attend practice
The cost for the Junior Swim Team covers the expenses of staff, end of season party and costs to cover the coach’s hourly rates. Team Suits are optional and are not covered within this registration fee.
Junior Swim Team Cost:
$135 Community Fee
$125 Faculty/Staff Fee
