To request special move-in arrangements, please contact the Office of Residence Life directly at (843) 349-6400. If I attend the transfer orientation session on August 13, can I move into campus early? Yes, if incoming students are formally registered for the last orientation session, they can move into their housing assignment during that time. Can I move into my room assignment early? No, unless you have a mitigating circumstance (i.e. special needs, international student, transfer orientation attendee, etc.), you will not be permitted to move-in before the halls open. If you plan to be in the area before move-in day, please plan to make arrangements at a local hotel. Can I see the room I’m going to move into? Rooms at CCU are used year-round for students and summer conference attendees. The only rooms available for show are our designated tour rooms. What furniture is provided in my new room? (Main Campus) Every student is provided a twin, extra-long bed, chest of drawers, closet, desk and desk chair in their bedroom space. Rooms with common areas may have a couch and/or chairs. Furniture is inventoried at the beginning and end of each school year. What should I bring to campus? Please click here to access our "Things to Bring" guide. Please refer to this site "Residence Halls Linen" to access bedding, bath, storage and essentials specially made for your dorm. Should I bring my own refrigerator and microwave? Students can bring a refrigerator no larger than 4.6 cubic feet and a microwave under 900 watts. Residents living in the Woods and Gardens communities will have a large refrigerator in their common area. Can I bring my bicycle to campus? Yes, all halls have bike racks located in or around each building. Students may place and lock their bikes in these designated areas at their own risk. Bicycles are not allowed to be stored in the resident’s room, apartment, hallway or balcony due to fire codes. Yes, all students are permitted to have a car on campus, but the car must be registered through the Department of Public Safety. Students living on-campus can purchase a "Resident" parking pass. No phones or phone service is provided to students. Emergency call boxes are located in building hallways and surrounding areas to connect directly to the Department of Public Safety. What do I do if I want to cancel my housing contract mid-year? The Residence Life contract is a binding agreement for both fall and spring semesters. Contracts may only be breeched if a student leaves the University or if a written appeal is granted by the Contract Appeals Committee. Do I have to move out of my residence hall over holiday breaks? While residents do not have to move their belongings out during the course of the school year, they must vacate the premises during Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring breaks. Students with extenuating circumstances can speak with their RD in advance. What can my Resident Assistant (RA) do to help me? Resident Assistants are specially trained upperclassmen residents who live in the building and assist each resident in their adjustment to University life. They provide everything from social opportunities to educational programming. They are available to answer any question a resident might have about life at the University or personal issues. They also serve as a resource for valuable information about campus activities and awareness. What can I get at my Community Desk? Community Desks are staffed by Resident Assistants and Desk Assistants and provide students with several important services. Residents should visit their Community Desks to fill out maintenance requests for any room issues, to be let into their room if they are locked out or to request guest privileges. Students can also visit the desk for any other issues needing immediate assistance. When/how/under what circumstances can I change rooms? Room change forms are available from the Resident Director of each community. Room change requests are granted on a space-available basis. If a student wants to change rooms because of a roommate conflict, he/she must consult with his/her Resident Assistant (RA) and/or Resident Director (RD) and discuss the issues at hand before a room change will be considered. In order to submit a room change request in this case, an RD must approve the request in writing on the room change request form If space is available, a room change may occur. What do I do if something breaks in my room/I need maintenance assistance? Students can fill out a maintenance request at their Community Desk for issues related to the state of their room and the safety of themselves and their roommates. Examples of maintenance issues include burnt out light bulbs, clogged toilets, broken blinds, etc. We recommend that students fill out requests immediately after an incident occurs. Can I have overnight guests in my room? Yes, residents are permitted to have same-gender, overnight guests as long as it is okay with your roommate(s). Overnight guests are allowed a maximum of three nights within a 14-day period. A guest pass/parking pass must be obtained from the Resident Director of the designated community for off-campus guests. These passes must be approved 48-hours in advance. Residents are permitted to have fish only. Fish tanks must not exceed 10 gallons. Residents found in violation will be fined and given 24-hours to remove the animal from the premises. If these policies are not followed, further judicial action will take place. Residents get their mail at the University Post Office in Sands Hall. Are there laundry facilities on campus? Yes, laundry rooms are located on first floor Waccamaw and Santee and in the Gardens. Residents who live in a house that does not have washer/dryer facilities may go to one of the nearby residence halls to use the washer/dryer facilities. How can I get a job with Residence Life? Whenever student positions become available, Residence Life posts them on the Web site and throughout the communities. Students can also check with office and building staff to see if positions become available due to recent staff exiting positions. Examples of student staff positions include Resident Assistants, Custodial Assistants, Summer Conference Assistants and Front Office Assistants. |
