Internship Information

The purpose of the internship course is to provide junior and senior Sociology majors with the opportunity to apply their sociological knowledge to a “real world” internship experience.  Student interns are required to work a minimum of 33 hours per credit hour earned in a human services, governmental, research, or criminal justice agency that closely matches their own academic interests or career goals. Throughout the semester, students will be asked to link their academic and practical knowledge through a series of activities and assignments. The internship experience will culminate in a final written paper in which the student analyzes their on-site professional experience through a sociological lens.

Benefits of participating in internships include:

  • Affirmation of major and career choice
  • Application of classroom learning
  • Development of professional work skills
  • Creation of a more competitive job candidate

We promote internship experiences in which:

  • Both the student and sponsoring organization benefit
  • The experience is relevant to the student’s major and/or career interest
  • Interns are be able to gain a new self-awareness and build confidence in their work ability by successfully completing work assignments
  • Interns are given direct and specific instruction by their employer supervisor in order to facilitate learning
  • Interns are exposed to a broad exposure to various departments and job functions within their organization
  • Interns are encouraged to develop the following work-related skills:
    • problem-solving
    • goal-setting
    • time management
    • effective communication
    • organizational skill
