The Sociology Program at Coastal Carolina University enrolls approximately 100 majors. Classes are usually of
moderate size ranging from 15 to 40 students. Individual attention is available to all students, and faculty advisors
work closely with students concerning academic advisement and career choices. The bachelor of arts degree program
provides students with a solid background in traditional areas of sociology, including course work in social problems,
sociological theory, social structures, the individual in society, and research methods in the social sciences. In
addition to approximately 53 hours of core curriculum courses, sociology majors complete at least 33 hours of
specialized sociology courses.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in internships with various local agencies, including agencies
for spouse abuse, child abuse, law enforcement, care of the elderly, community recreation programs, and alcohol and
drug programs. Some students have presented information and data from their internship experiences at local and
regional meetings and conferences. Independent study opportunities allow students to work closely with a faculty
member in an area of interest to the student where a traditional course is not offered. Students also have the
opportunity to earn elective credit for volunteer work in various community organizations, including mental health
centers, rape crisis agencies, and agencies which care for special needs children. Students may quality for membership
in Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society.

agencies, government programs, and in areas relating to criminal justice and social work.

work in introductory sociology as well as upper level courses such as demography, social structures, and sociological
theory. A total of 21 credit hours in approved course work is required to complete the minor.
GERONTOLOGY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
A new addition to the Sociology Department is the Gerontology Certification Program. This interdisciplinary program is
designed to provide students with a foundation of knowledge and skills in the study of aging. The 21 credit (seven
course) undergraduate certificate program is open to any degree-seeking student currently enrolled in a degree program
at the University, and individuals holding a baccalaureate degree who desire specialized studies. The
multi-disciplinary nature of the program allows individuals of different interests and backgrounds to develop
