Athletic BANDS
MARCHING BAND Begun in the Fall of 2003, The CCU Spirit of the Chanticleer Marching Band is the most visible of the CCU Bands, providing the color and pageantry of Coastal Athletics and enrichment of university life. The band performs regularly at home and selected away football games, parades, festivals, and accepts invitations to perform at high school marching band exhibitions. The band schedule does not conflict with other academic classes. In fact, members of the band enjoy having a break from daily study and classroom work while building leadership skills and lifelong friendships.
Spirit holds its annual preseason band camp approximately one week prior to the fall term. Band camp is required of all members and consists of placement auditions, fundamentals training, and show preparations. After the conclusion of camp, the band resumes a class-time rehearsal schedule—no extra rehearsals are scheduled outside of class. The band rehearses Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:30 to 6:00pm. Members enroll for university credit toward their academic degree. In addition, the university pays for most all expenses, including the preseason band camp and all of the band's travel costs.
SPIRIT PEP BAND This is the group that provides musical support for basketball and arena functions. The Pep Band is open to any student regardless of major, with members selected by audition only. The group is limited to 29 members and 2 alternates with instrumentation based on the available pool of auditionees. Each member of the group (including alternates) will recieve a participation stipend of $240. All members must perform at on campus events, but only 29 members will travel to any away games or post season tournaments. Pep Band is a Fall 2 and Spring 1 course, listed at MUS 124P, rehearsing at 7:00pm on Sunday nights beginning in mid-October
GROOVIN' CHANTS The Spirit of the Chanticleer Marching Band and Spirit Pep Band receive many requests to perform at private and public events across the state throughout the year. To assist in meeting these demands, the Groovin' Chants (a microcosm of the Coastal Carolina University Bands) can be reqested for such performances. This 14-member ensemble is selected by audition from the Spirit of the Chanticleer Marching Band. This group of talented performers entertains audiences by performing classic standards from the 50s through today. This ensemble is available by contacting Matthew Shrewsbury (mshrewsbury@coastal.edu or 843.349.2775).
