Director of Bands
James L. Tully, Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Coastal Carolina University, has over 25 years of experience teaching music at the secondary, adult, and collegiate levels. He is the founding director of the Coastal Carolina University Bands, where he is conductor of the Symphonic Band and Coastal Winds, and teaches courses in conducting and arranging. He was director of the CCU Marching Band from 2003-2011 and continues to serve in creative and teaching capacities for that group.
He holds the B.M. in music education and M.M. in wind band conducting from West Virginia University, and the Doctor of Education degree from the University of Memphis. His primary conducting teachers were Don Wilcox and Lawrence Christianson, with additional study with Eugene Corporon.
Prior to coming to CCU in 2000, Tully had an 11 year career leading successful middle and high school band programs in Tennessee, Mississippi and South Carolina. Secondary school bands under his direction have appeared at such events as Bands of America Regional Marching Contests and various state and regional conferences. At Coastal, the CCU Marching Band has performed at a Bands of America Fall Preview, and The Coastal Winds has been the featured collegiate ensemble at the South Carolina Music Educator's Conference.
His music arrangements have been heard at major college bowl games, parades such as Macy's Parades, and numerous Bands of America contests, and have been played by such groups as the Bob Jones University Symphonic Wind Band, the University of Alabama "Million Dollar Band" and WVU's "Pride of West Virginia." His work is published with Eighth Note Publications in Ontario, Canada, and Grand Mesa Music Publishers in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Tully is a frequent guest conductor and adjudicator in states such as Alabama, Nebraska, North Carolina, Georgia, West Virginia, New York, Minnesota and Tennessee. He is published in journals such as MENC's Teaching Music and Kappa Delta Pi's The Educational Forum. He has been a presenter at various conferences of the College Band Director’s National Association, including the 2010 Southern Division CBDNA/NBA joint conference, and the National Collegiate Marching and Athletic Band Symposium. He has been a participant in the University of North Texas Conductors Collegium and is the recipient of the National Band Association's Citation of Excellence.
Tully is a member of Phi Beta Mu, World Association of Symphonic Bands & Ensembles, National Band Association, and Music Educators National Conference.
