Director of Bands
Raul G. Barcenes is Assistant Professor of Music, Assistant Director of Bands, Director of Athletic Bands at Coastal Carolina University. In this capacity, he is responsible for all aspects of administration for “The Spirit of the Chanticleer Marching Band” and Pep Band. Prior to coming to Coastal, Dr. Barcenes was Assistant Professor of Music and Visiting Director of Bands at Elon University, where he taught courses in band, music education, and conducting. He also served on the faculties at Waller Junior High School in Waller, TX and the Keppel Union School District in Pearblossom, CA and was a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has been active as a clinician in Texas, Nevada, California, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Virginia.
His primary conducting teachers were Carolyn Barber, Takayoshi "Tad" Suzuki, Jonathan Good, Jonathan Hooper, and Daryn Obrecht. He studied educational administration and politics with Roger Gallizi, Donald Crane, Ulysses Chatman, and Jim Schettig. He has also worked with Paula Holcomb, Rodney Winther, and Craig Kirchhoff in masterclass settings.
Dr. Barcenes earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Band Conducting (related area in Music Education) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from Chapman University, a Master of Music in Wind Band Conducting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Tarleton State University.
His professional affiliations include memberships of Kappa Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Lambda, Mu Phi Epsilon, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Educators Association, and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE), where is on the Permanently Out-of-Print task force. He has been active in Drum Corps International (DCI) and was on the instructional staff of the Racine Scouts in 2012. He has also presented a workshop on employment materials for the Mu Phi Epsilon Southeast 1 District on employment preparation in the field of music.
