Student taking a testPRAXIS Testing

The Praxis test is a product of the Educational Testing Services. Coastal offers both Praxis I and Praxis II.

Praxis I

Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Assessments (PPSTฎ) are designed to measure basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. The assessments are available in two formats: paper-based (offered on pre-scheduled Saturday test dates along with the Praxis II) or computer-based.

To register for the computer based test, candidates must register at www.ets.org (see registration info below). Candidates may choose to take the three sections of the Praxis I test as one appointment or break it into two or three appointments. If taking the test as one appointment, the fee is $130.00 and time allotted for the test is 4.5 hours; if choosing to break the test into two appointments, the fee is $160 and the total testing time for the 2 appointments is 6.5 hrs. (2 hrs. for one appointment and 4.5 for the other); if taking the test at three separate appointment times, the fee is $160 (NOTE: The 3 appointments MUST be scheduled during the same registration session). Should a candidate fail any one part of the combined test, that is the only portion for which they must retest. Candidates must allow 30 days to pass before retesting and they may test no more than six times in a 12 month period. Candidates must present two valid current forms of identification such as a driver's license and a school ID (one must be a signed photo ID). Scratch paper and pencils are provided. Candidates must allow three days, not counting the scheduled test date and the day of contact, to request to reschedule a test and a rescheduling fee will be charged. Should the request to reschedule fall short of the three day minimum, candidates will forfeit their entire fee. All rescheduling requests should go through ETS’s Candidate Services Contact Center by contacting 1-800-853-6773 or online at www.ets.org.

Test centers may not distribute information or advise examinees about Praxis minimum qualifying scores. This is necessary to prevent inadvertently giving out incorrect information when states modify their score requirements. To view Praxis score requirements, please refer to the Praxis website www.ets.org/praxis. There you can view each state's requirements by selecting the state name from the drop-down list on the home page.

Your official score report will be available online via your My Praxis Account, 2-3 weeks after the test date. Your scores will also be sent to up to three institutions/agencies you selected during the test process. Online scores are downloadable for 45 calendar days. After 45 days, they will no longer be available and you will need to request additional score reports for a $40 fee (per request). We recommend saving a copy of your score report for future reference.

Praxis II

Praxis II: Subject Assessment tests measure knowledge of specific subjects that K-12 educators will teach, as well as general and subject-specific teaching skills and knowledge. There are Subject Assessments, Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Tests and Teaching Foundations Tests. Register for these tests at www.ets.org. The majority of the Praxis II tests are paper/pencil, given on nationally scheduled Saturday dates on the Coastal Carolina University campus. However, it is possible to take the following Praxis II tests on computer, by appointment, at the Academic Testing Center:

  • Elementary Education: Content Knowledge (5014) $120
  • Elementary Education: Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment (5011) $120

PRAXIS Appointment Scheduling

Effective November 16, 2011:

Prometric Candidate Services and local Test Centers no longer perform Praxis registration activities. Praxis test dates on and after November 16, 2011 must be scheduled through the new online registration system available on the Praxis website (www.ets.org/praxis). Appointments must be made at least three full days before your test date (not including the day of your test or the day of your request).

PRAXIS Appointment rescheduling/cancel

If you need to reschedule to a test date on or after November 16, 2011, you will need to call Prometric Candidate Services (1-443-751-4859 or 1-800-853-6773) to cancel the existing appointment, then log into the ETS portal, create a profile and register for the test through the new Praxis registration system (www.ets.org/praxis).

Note: As always, changes must be made at least three full days before the test date (not including the day of the test or the day of the request) or the test fee will be forfeited. To request a partial refund for a canceled test, examinees may download the Refund Request Form from the Praxis website.

ParaPro Assessment

The ParaPro Assessment measures the reading, writing and basic math competencies of practicing and prospective paraprofessionals. In accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act, the ParaPro Assessment can be used to certify teacher’s aides and assistants in the instruction of these subjects to school children. It is a general aptitude test that offers certification for paraprofessionals. It also offers an objective assessment of a prospective teacher’s foundation of knowledge and skills and the ability to effectively use those skills in the classroom. This is a paper/pencil test, typically offered in conjunction with the Praxis II national test dates, but only available on specific test dates. The test will be delivered on the following dates:

  • January 14, 2012
  • June 9, 2012

For additional dates or information check www.ets.org/parapro.

PLEASE NOTE: ETS will no longer allow standby registrations the day of the Praxis paper/pencil test. All candidates MUST be registered prior to the test date.
