Welcome from Kenneth J. Martin, Chair of the Department of Theatre

What an exciting time to be a part of the Coastal Carolina University Department of Theatre! As the university grows and expands, so does our program and our ability to offer professional training in a liberal arts environment. We offer expanding facilities, new and growing faculty, and a commitment to building the best training program in the region.

With programs in Theatre Performance, Musical Theater, and Design and Technical Theater. The department is large enough to provide the challenges and production quality necessary to your training, yet small enough to ensure individualized attention. We offer a varied season of at least six productions, a dance concert, and a variety of other performances. It is our belief that the best way to train as a theatre artist is to be on stage, and our season is geared to offering as many student opportunities as possible. Students are encouraged from their first days on campus to become members of the company, to work on stage, back stage, and at all points in between. With the guidance of a faculty mentor, students also fully produce two plays each year, performing all the jobs from directors and designers to producing and advertising.

You will find CCU Theater alumni working in virtually every discipline of the performing arts. Graduates include New York playwright, Neal Utterback, actors Michael Kelly (Carlito’s Way, Dawn of the Dead) and Jason Vail (Guiding Light, As the World Turns), comic book writer, Brandon Snider, and many others.

Myrtle Beach and the greater “Grand Strand” area, like the University, are growing and dynamic places, particularly in the world of entertainment. A number of live entertainment venues offer work for CCU graduates, and those who wish to pursue film and television in the region have several local options as well. Future plans include the development of professional theater in the area, the expansion of international exchanges, and continued growth in the areas of musical theater and dance. Please take the time to visit our campus and see one of our productions. You will find our performance schedule and other related information on this website. And please, feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I am always happy to help.
