The Office of Undergraduate Research is a resource for the support and promotion of undergraduate learning and faculty/student collaboration through research and creative experiences and the dissemination of research, scholarly, and creative outcomes.
What is Undergraduate Research?
Undergraduate research (UGR) is broadly defined as original research and scholarly or creative work within or across academic disciplines that is conducted by an undergraduate student or team of students, usually with guidance from a faculty or external mentor. It is a process of careful inquiry, methodology, and outcomes leading to the discovery of new information or the generation of creative works.
Undergraduate Research at Coastal Carolina University
CCU students from all disciplines conduct undergraduate research. It is a powerful learning experience and a clear pathway to success in careers and graduate programs.
- In the 2013-2014 academic year, nearly 600 undergraduate CCU students enrolled in an undergraduate research course. Most of these were individual research or directed study courses in which students worked one-on-one with their faculty mentor.
- In the 2012-2013 academic year, CCU undergraduate students were authors/presenters in:
- 92 presentations at professional conferences/exhibitions
- 15 peer-reviewed articles in professional publications
- >100 presentations and publications in CCU scholarly journals, the CCU Undergraduate Research Competition, and University Symposia
- >100 senior research theses
