UNIVERSITY TRADEMARKS

The University claims as its trademarks any design, symbol, logo, art, word or words associated with or directly referring to the University.

The University has legal trademarks for the following:
• University seal
• Coastal Carolina University name and logo
• Letter combination CCU
• University athletic logo and athletic team marks
• Words Chant, Chants, Chanticleer, Chanticleers
• Campus symbol and the word Atheneum
• 1954 Society name and logo
• Chanticleer Gear
• 50th Anniversary logo
• CINO (Coastal Is Number One)

Graphic Identity

Graphic identity is the sum of all of the visual impressions associated with the name of an organization or business. The impact of a graphic identity plan depends on consistent and continuous use of the elements of the plan, ultimately resulting in repeated impressions over an extended period of time. Familiar logos are often processed visually rather than read as words, and in some cases, become more powerful than the word mark itself.

A shared graphic identity plan helps build Coastal Carolina University's stature as a place of premier education and will help us increase the quality, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of all of our communications efforts.

Use of the University marks

The Coastal Carolina University name, logos, abbreviations, trademarks, symbols, emblems and other terminology associated with the University (the "marks") are registered and fully protected trademarks. As such, the marks must only be used for approved purposes, and cannot be modified in any way without approval. To prevent the proliferation of unauthorized versions of the logo, as well as inappropriate applications, electronic logo files will be distributed to campus constituents through the Office of Marketing/Licensing. For the same reason, scanning or downloading the logo, whether using approved versions or previously printed materials, also is prohibited. Copies of the official logo are available for approved uses from the Office of Marketing Communications.

Commercial use of the University marks

Unauthorized commercial use of the marks of Coastal Carolina University is unlawful trademark infringement. Coastal Carolina University operates its licensing program with Licensing Resource Group to direct and protect the use of the University marks. Accordingly, vendors who wish to use the University name and/or logo(s) for profit must be licensed by the University and must pay an eight percent royalty for such use. Any production or sale of unauthorized products or services is unlawful and is subject to liability for damages, injunctive relief, legal fee and other penalties, civil and criminal. Infringing merchandise is subject to seizure.

All other uses of the University’s name and/or logo(s), whether by a University-affiliated group or by an off-campus organization and regardless of the purpose, must secure permission from the University's Office of Marketing/Licensing, prior to such use.
