Charmaine Tomczyk

WIPL Scholarship Committee Chair

Charmaine Tomczyk, WIPL Scholarship ChairCharmaine Tomczyk is a part-time project director for the University’s historical documents in the Center for Records Management. She served as the first faculty ombuds at Coastal Carolina University, a position she held from 2008 to 2015. She is a charter member of Women in Philanthropy and Leadership and served as president from 2009-2010.

In her more than 37-year career at the University, Tomczyk has served as director for Undergraduate Research and director of the Celebration of Inquiry Conference. For seven years she served as associate provost/associate vice president for Academic Affairs and assisted students with their academic concerns. As the former faculty secretary (adviser) of the University’s Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society, Tomczyk was nominated by student ODK members and received the Robert L. Morlan Award for “Most Outstanding Faculty Secretary” in 2008 from among 300 Circles in the nation. She also received the Coastal Carolina University Student Affairs Division Award in 2007. 

She has been president and a member of the executive board of the South Carolina Women in Higher Education (SCWHE) and served as chair of the SCWHE selection committee for the annual Martha Kime Piper Award, presented annually to a woman in higher education who has a record of advancing and supporting women in their careers and the education of women in South Carolina. She was a member of the Rotary Club of Conway and served on its review board for Rotary International Scholarships and Peace Fellowships. 

Tomczyk earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Connecticut (Storrs). While working at the Yale University Libraries, she completed a Master of Science in Library Science at Southern Connecticut State University.
