Horry County Rivers and Wetlands Protection Committee
Name
Horry County Rivers and Wetlands Protection Committee
Mission
Facilitate the development of proactive, unified solutions that protect the quality and value of our rivers, streams and wetlands for the health, welfare and safety of current and future generations
Goals
- Protect the scenic beauty and recreational value of our rivers, streams, and wetlands
- Conserve the essential flood reduction, groundwater recharge, and pollution filtering of wetlands
- Ensure that flood prone areas and floodways are maintained in a state where their essential natural functions can be performed
- Protect the water quality and general health of our rivers, streams, and wetlands
Recommendations
The committee recommends that Horry County Council adopt the option of using Conservation Subdivisions as a conditional use in a variety of existing zoning districts. History
Based on citizen comments to Horry County’s Infrastructure and Regulation Committee and Stormwater Advisory Board regarding growth and development impacts to wetlands, streams, and floodplains, the Infrastructure and Regulation Committee directed the Stormwater Advisory Board to form an ad hoc committee. That committee would be charged with gathering stakeholder input to come up with recommendations to proactively address the protection of floodplains, wetlands, and streams at the local government level. The group has developed a mission and goals, and is working to develop key strategies.
