Instructional Resources

The Academic Continuity Plan will be implemented on Monday, March 23.

Consult CCU Digital Learning Resources for recommendations on faculty and student support as we transition to completing our Spring 2020 term in the digital learning environment. Our colleagues in COOL and CeTEAL are updating this page regularly with resources, ideas, and best practices.

The South Carolina Department of Education maintains an interactive map of WIFI hotstops throughout the state. Click here to view the map.

WiFi Access – If you need WiFi access and do not currently have, contact your local cable provider directly. Spectrum, Charter and others have announced free Wi-Fi for students during this time.Charter will offer free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription and at any service level up to 100 Mbps. To enroll call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households. Click here to learn more regarding Spectrum's response to COVID-19.

COOL and CeTEAL

All faculty can add colleagues to their courses in Moodle without submitting a Faculty Course Request. Please feel free to add your departmental/college faculty colleagues, graduate assistants, and graders as needed to support you. To do so, simply select Participants from the left-hand side panel; your class roster in this course will then load, and a new Enroll Users button will appear at top right.

Congratulations to our newly recognized COOL Faculty Course Managers from across the departments and colleges! Reach out to them for assistance and ideas on digital learning implementations within your disciplines.

Library

Kimbel Library will operate virtual services from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm seven days a week. This includes assistance for faculty and students to locate alternative teaching materials or resources for projects.  Services range from chat and text to more extensive research consultations.  Information can be found on the library website and also on the Library’s COVID-19 Libguide.  Faculty and students can request digitization of certain materials using this form.  Faculty please do not hesitate to contact your Library Liaison for assistance.

The library continues to distribute laptops to students, faculty, and staff.  Students can request a laptop with this form.  Faculty and staff can also request a laptop by calling 843-349-2400.  With the physical library closed, library staff will provide curbside pickup for local faculty, staff, and students.  Library employees will work with individuals to arrange a time for pick up between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm Monday-Friday.  Items will be shipped to those at a distance. The library also acquired additional graphing calculators and can mail those out as well.  If there is something someone needs Library Services is standing by to help.

Academic Resources for Students

The CCU Digital Learning Resources page includes links to a variety of free resources for students. One of these resources is VitalSource, which has partnered with Barnes and Noble, Wiley, and other companies to provide free access to e-books for students who may have lost access to course materials.

The Coastal Student Success Center continues to provide online tutoring and academic coaching appointments. This includes the Mathematics Learning Center, the Writing Center, and the Foreign Language Instructional Center, as well as Academic Coaching.

Advising and Student Registration

Registration for Fall 2020 will continue as planned. All advising holds have been removed.

Forms are not necessary for registration requests (e.g., special permission). Instead, send an email to registrar@coastal.edu with any registration request. Copy the student’s advisor, department chair, and instructor on email registration requests. The Registrar will wait 24 hours before processing the request. In order to reduce the number of emails, please do not send or expect a reply unless the request is denied. Advisors, chairs, and instructors should not send an “approved” message. Silence is assent!

Student Support

Dean of Students

The Dean of Students Office is continuing to support students remotely. Sara Peacock and her team created a website that consolidates resources related to food and financial insecurity; students can access that here:  https://www.coastal.edu/sai/singlestop/.  Within that page is a link to the Student Benevolence Fund. That fund is not as robust as we would like. If you are seeking a place to make a gift that will support students, please consider giving to the Student Benevolence Fund.

In addition, if you are worried about a specific student, or if a student has reached out to you for help, you should submit that information via the Dean of Students’ online referral system: https://cm.maxient.com/reportingform.php?CoastalCarolinaUniv&layout_id=2.  A DSO staff member will reach out to students based on these referrals.

If students have any questions about access to the CINO food pantry, they should contact Amelia Carte directly at acarte@coastal.edu.

Counseling Services

Counseling Services will continue to be available during regular operating hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday via phone. To contact Counseling Services, please call 843-349-2305 and staff will consult and assist remotely, as appropriate.

Counselors will not be providing in-person or over-the phone therapy, but will consult as needed to support each student and work to connect students with mental health services in the communities where students are currently located.

Counselors will also make referrals to campus partners who may be able to assist with academic needs or other support services in the online learning environment as appropriate.

Outside of standard business hours, counselors will continue to offer 24/7 on-call services for crises.

Library Services and Materials

Students who need access to a laptop or a specialty calculator should request one via the Library using this form. Library staff will provide curbside pickup for local students and will ship items to students who are at some distance from campus.

Travel, Campus Access, and Other Administrative Items

The CCU campus is closed. If you need to access items from your office, classroom, or academic building, you may request permission from your dean to come to campus. These restrictions allow staff to sanitize and secure most buildings. Each time an individual enters a sanitized building, the building will have to be re-treated, so only in exceptional circumstances should you expect to return to campus.

All non-essential University-sponsored travel (international and domestic) has been suspended.

Faculty who currently hold PEG awards have been notified via email about options for extending the grant period or revising their proposed scope of work.
