Assistant Professor, Physical Education
Nilo C. Ramos, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the physical education (PE) program. He received his doctoral (2013) degree in Kinesiology with emphasis in Sport Pedagogy from the University of Georgia and Master of Science (2006) and Bachelor of Arts (2002) degrees in Health and Physical Education from Albany State University.
Dr. Ramos has worked as a PE teacher at the elementary and secondary levels and as a faculty in other PE programs at Oklahoma State University, Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, Dakota State University, and Emporia State University.
With a focus on quality physical education, physical activity, and sport instruction, Dr. Ramos’ research interests relate to teaching/coaching development and expertise. More specifically, his interests include PE teacher credibility, dispositions and fitness and activity levels of in-service and pre-service PE teachers, assessment in PE, and physical education and coaching education programs. He has published and presented research nationally and internationally.
Dr. Ramos currently serves as a journal reviewer for Strategies, JOHPERD, European Physical Education Review; and Revista Colloquium Vitae; as a member for the SHAPE America PE Council, Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America) and South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD); and as a program reviewer for SHAPE America Research Consortium.
In his spare time, Dr. Ramos enjoys exercising and being physically active, including engaging in soccer, basketball, running and weight training. He also enjoys exploring the world. He has visited countries including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, Uruguay, Argentina, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Taiwan.
Played U-14 soccer at one of the pro-Brazilian teams (Coritiba Foot Ball Club); As a young basketball player, he had the opportunity to meet NBA players Otis Smith, Stacey “Plastic Man” Augmon and Charles Jones; Played 3 years professional basketball in Brazil; Ran a marathon in 3:06.18.
