Biography

Mr. Garrett Griffin is currently the Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina.  Mr. Griffin is pursuing a PhD in Music Education with a focus in Instrumental Conducting at the University of Florida, studying with Dr. David A. Waybright and Dr. William Bauer. As a graduate teaching assistant he worked with the concert ensembles, mentored undergraduate conducting students, worked with the Sudler Trophy award winning Gator Marching Band, and taught undergraduate music education courses.  Mr. Griffin earned his Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Florida and his Bachelor of Music Education from East Carolina University where he studied with Dr. Jeff Jarvis, Dr. Edward Jacobs, and Dr. Gregory Hurley. 

Previously, Mr. Griffin was the Director of Bands at West Johnston High School in Benson, NC where he served as Associate Director from 2005-2011, and as Director from 2011-2014.  During his tenure, the marching band performed in the 2008 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and were the premier ensemble for the 2010 ABC Disney Christmas Parade.  Mr. Griffin has 18 years of experience in the marching arts. He was a member of the world champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, and served on the staffs of the Boston Crusaders and the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps.   

While attending the University of Florida, Mr. Griffin served as co-conductor of the UF Concert Band, and has guest conducted the UF Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony.  In 2015, he conducted Derek Jenkins’ We Seven at the Society of Composers, Inc. 50th Anniversary National Conference.  In 2017, Mr. Griffin accompanied the American Chamber Winds on their European tour, conducting the brass ensemble in l’eglise de la Madeleine in Paris, France.  In 2018, Mr. Griffin was selected as a conducting associate at the Vienna Summer Music Festival, where he studied conducting under Wolfgang Scheidt, Christian Schulz, Gergely Sugar, Simeon Pironkoff, and Giuseppe Montesano.  He conducted music of Beethoven and Stravinsky in Berio Hall, Konzerthaus and Palais Pálffy. 

He has served as a guest clinician, consultant, and educator for band programs and honor bands throughout the United States. 

Mr. Griffin is a member of NAfME, FMEA, SCMEA,and CBNDA.  He became an Honory Member of  the Alpha Eta chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi from the University of Florida in 2018.
