Biography

John Woodson has more than forty years of professional experience as an actor, director, and teacher. He has performed in over a hundred productions across the country.  New York productions include; Jason in the Broadway production of Medea, starring Dame Diana Rigg; Kent in King Lear with Hal Holbrook at The Roundabout Theatre (Gerald Freedman directing), Kent in King Lear with F. Murray Abraham at the NY Shakespeare Festival/Public Theatre, Exeter in Henry V, at the NY Shakespeare Festival; Destiny of Me, at the Lucille Lortel Theatre; and the world premiere of Romulus Linney’s Love Suicide at Schofield Barracks at the Signature Theatre Company.  Woodson was also a founding company member at Signature Theatre Company. Regionally, John has worked in many theatres including: Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Dallas Theatre Center, The Alley Theatre, The Alabama Shakespeare Festival (company member), The Cleveland Playhouse, The Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Philadelphia Theatre Company, Long Wharf, Studio Arena, The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival (founding company member), The Idaho Shakespeare Festival and The American Stage Company. John served as Artistic and Executive Director of The Warehouse Theatre in Greenville, SC from 2002-2006. He also served as Artistic Director of Atlantic Stage in Myrtle Beach, SC from 2008 – 2010 where he appeared in Proof and Art. Directing credits for Atlantic Stage include: The Glass Menagerie and Santaland Diaries. In addition to theatre, Woodson has an active career in film and television. He received his training from The North Carolina School of the Arts. Woodson was on faculty at Coastal Carolina University from 2009 – 2020 and is happy to be returning as an Artist in Residence. Woodson initiated what is now the New Works series for the Department of Theatre at CCU directing the readings of: Bigfoot and Other Lost Souls, The Zombie Musical, Toast, The Age of Power, and Alligator. Productions directed at CCU include: Miss Julie, A Chorus Line, 1940’s Radio Hour, The Philadelphia Story, Bigfoot and Other Lost Souls, Twelfth Night, Our Town, A New Brain, The Crucible, and On the Verge. CCU performance credits include: Into the Woods and Pride and Prejudice.
