Leigh Hughes is an assistant professor of Graphic Design in the Visual Arts department. She is originally from Akron, Ohio, and earned a B.A. in Visual Communication Design from Kent State University in 2002 and her MFA in Visual Communication Design from Kent State University 2017. She is an active member of AIGA (the professional association for graphic design) and faculty advisor for the CCU student group. Prior to teaching, she worked as a practicing designer for 14 years and has an extensive background in package design, publication design, advertising, shopper marketing, brand identity and user experience design, working with such notable Fortune 500 Companies including Disney, Nestlé, Kimberly-Clark, Unilever, Philips Norelco, Johnson & Johnson, Sherwin Williams, Target, Walmart, Toys-R-Us, and Costco. Her love and curiosity of technology, coding, architecture and the fine arts were the basis for her pursuit in the graphic design profession.

Her research examines how gender-considerate game design might help reduce the gender gap in STEM professions, particularly engineering and computer science. More specifically, examining spatial relation skills in early childhood and the benefits of 3D gaming on female development.
