Michael H. Roberts
Vice President for Research and Emerging Initiatives/Dean, College of Science
Dr. Michael H. Roberts currently serves as the Vice-President for Research and Emerging Initiatives and the Dean of the College of Science at Coastal Carolina University.
Dr. Roberts came to Coastal Carolina University in July of 2007 as Dean of the College of Science. Prior his arrival, Dr. Roberts served as Associate Dean and Acting Dean of the Dyson College of Arts and Sciences at Pace University in New York, NY. Before his time at Pace University, Dr. Roberts was on the Biology faculty at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY, where he was the Chair of the Biology Department.
Prior to taking on his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Roberts oversaw a National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF) supported research program that focused on the Physiology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry of the processes regulating Circadian Rhythms – daily cycles of activity – in marine snails.
In addition to his duties at Coastal Carolina University, Dr. Roberts heads the 5th T Innovation group: the non-profit organization that owns and operates the Conway and Georgetown Innovation Centers – business development centers that develop new and existing businesses in the region through mentoring, counselling, and a business loan program.
When not working, Dr. Roberts makes delicious home-brew.
Dr. Roberts received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Union College in Schenectady, NY (1977), and his Master’s (1981) and Doctoral (1984) degrees, also in Biology, from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. Prior to joining the faculty at Clarkson University, he spent three years (1984-1987) doing post-doctoral research in the Neurology Department at Stony Brook University. Dr. Roberts has had leadership training from the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education, and Clemson University’s Leadership South Carolina program.
