Associate Dean, University College and Director, University Honors Program
Michael Ruse, an associate professor of philosophy, is director of the Honors Program and associate dean of University College.
Ruse received a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Northwestern University in 1984 and a master's degree and Ph.D. from Stony Brook University in New York, in 1988 and 1991, respectively. He was an assistant professor of philosophy at the American University in Cairo from 1993 to 1998, when he joined the Coastal faculty. He served as chair of the Department of Philosophy from 2008-2011, chair of the Faculty Senate from 2009-2011, and has served on many University wide committees.
He is the author of many publications, including "Technology and the Evolution of the Human: From Bergson to the Philosophy of Technology" and "Henri Bergson's Critique of the Intellect: Prologue to an Organic Epistemology." His areas of expertise include the philosophy of technology and social-political philosophy.
