Explain Changes to cognates policy: Cognate Requirements (12 Credits) FROM: Cognate courses are upper-level courses numbered 300 or 400 in disciplines other than the student’s major, but that support the major. Cognate courses should be chosen in consultation with the student’s academic adviser. Alternatively, history majors may choose a minor to replace the cognate requirement. Requirements for the minor are set by the minor department. The cognate requirement is subsumed by the minor. Upper-level courses taken while enrolled in a CCU approved study abroad program may also count toward the cognate requirement. The change facilitates study abroad learning opportunities for history majors.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

History majors will be able to better anticipate which courses will be accepted toward the fulfillment of the major. This also enables/facilitates the use of financial aid for courses used to complete major requirements.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

none

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

Cognates to be taught either by CCU faculty during study abroad trips within faculty load or are to be taught by non-CCU faculty.
