CHEM 353 - Physical Biochemistry (3 credits) (Prereq: PHYS 205 or PHYS 211, MATH 160 or MATH 160B, CHEM 351, and CHEM 351L) (Coreq: CHEM 353L) This course develops mathematically the physical principles in chemistry and how they are applied to tackle important problems in biochemistry, biology and medicine. Topics include laws of thermodynamics applied to biological molecules, kinetics of life processes, including the rate of reactions, and applying the laws to complex biological processes, the dynamics of microscopic systems, and general features of spectroscopy with applications to biological systems in the area of photobiology. Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

No changes are proposed to the course content. This course is required for the Biochemistry (BS) degree. The course is being rescheduled from Spring to Fall. This will allow students to take a Spring semester major elective course (CHEM 453/L Biomolecular Structure and Function) in the same academic year. CHEM 353 is not a prerequisite for CHEM 453, but students are recommended to take the courses in numerical progression.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

Rescheduling from Spring to Fall may allow some students to graduate in December who otherwise would be required to wait until May, since CHEM 353 is required for the Biochemistry (BS) degree.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None.
