CHEM 311L, Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory (Prereq: CHEM 112, 112L; Coreq: CHEM 311) This laboratory course parallels the inorganic chemistry lecture course and includes experiments in basic nuclear chemistry, computational chemistry of atomic properties and their periodic trends, electrochemistry, symmetry, synthesis and characterization of coordination compounds and the spectroscopic study of stoichiometry and stability constants of coordination compounds. SP.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

The Inorganic Chemistry lecture course was introduced ten years ago as a sophomore level bridge course to cover topics dropped from the General Chemistry sequence at Coastal and to better prepare students for the required senior level CHEM 411/411L Advanced Inorganic Chemistry course. Since then the lower level course has become the required course for chemistry majors and the nation-wide acceptance of the need for such a course as reflected in the new American Chemical Society Exam for the “Foundations of Inorganic Chemistry” Exam and publication of several textbooks for the course.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

Now that the CHEM 411/411L lecture and laboratory courses are not required for chemistry majors, the introduction of essential laboratory techniques in CHEM 311L is needed. In additional to the requirement for chemistry majors to take the courses, biochemistry majors are now permitted to include the CHEM 311 lecture and laboratory as upper level electives. With that change, it will be appropriate to increase the bioinorganic aspects of these courses.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

The use of computational chemistry modeling software, Spartan Student, required that institutions that used the software purchase copies of the software for instructors to off-set the nominal cost of $20 to students. Copies of the software for Goodwin and McWilliams at $700/copy were obtained through a technology grant.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

Equipment and chemical reagents and other expendables are mostly available from shared resources of upper level courses and faculty research.

In the trial-run of the laboratory, a completely new laboratory manual was prepared by John Goodwin. It is currently under revision based on the experiences of the trial run by Kevin McWilliams.
