Current catalog description

CHEM 453 Biomolecular Structure and Function (3 credits) (Prereq: CHEM 332 and MATH 160) (Coreq: CHEM 453L and PHYS 205 or PHYS 211) This course will explore the correlation between biomolecular structure and function through molecular modeling, structural biology and biophysical techniques. Topics will include protein structure, nucleic structure, folding and dynamics, molecular recognition, catalysis, allostery, comparative modeling, molecular dynamics simulations, structure determination with experimental d analysis of molecular motions. F.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

No changes are proposed to the course content. This course is a major elective for the Biochemistry (BS) degree. Currently, there are few courses offered in the Spring semester to meet the major elective requirements. Although Chem 353 is not a prerequisite, the change to a Spring offering will allow students to complete CHEM 353 in the Fall before taking CHEM 453, which provides a more natural progression in topics and complexity.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

The additional option of a major elective in the Spring semester will benefit students trying to graduate in May. Scheduling of major electives, which have significant prerequisites has been a logistical challenge for Biochemistry (BS) majors.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

The course is being rescheduled from Fall to Spring. No additional costs are anticipated.
