MATH 420 An Introduction to Mathematical Biology (3) (Math 320 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent) Introduction to mathematical modeling techniques in the biological sciences; includes continuous versus discrete models; deterministic versus stochastic models; population dynamics and ecology; includes Lotka-Volterra equations, spread of infectious diseases. Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

There is a high level of interest among our students for more options of mathematical electives at the 400 level. Most electives offered are in theoretical mathematics. This course will offer variety and contribute to offerings for applied mathematics. This high level of interest is evidenced by the first time enrollment of 17 students. It is rare that our 400 level mathematics classes have an enrollment this high.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

As mentioned above, this course will fill a much needed gap in providing students with an additional 400 level mathematics elective in applied math. Depending on a student's goals upon graduation, this course may prepare them more for jobs in applied fields.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None
